Episode Transcription

Dessane Lopez Cassell: For Sol LeWitt, The late great Conceptual artist, the artwork was in the idea.

Sol LeWitt: Yeah. I had the idea that I could give a person a plan, and that he could do it if he knew the technique. Each person is a different person, and I kind of liked the idea that they had a different personality.

Dessane Lopez Cassell: Many decades on, Sol LeWitt's work continues to bear fruit, both in and outside of the realm of visual art. And in that spirit, the estate of Sol LeWitt has teamed up with Microsoft. Together, they have built an app powered by Microsoft AI technology that lets anyone with a smartphone dive into LeWitt's life, artworks and process. This app is an opportunity for people to find inspiration in Sol LeWitt's ideas, really like never before. And that got us thinking, mainly about other ways that fellow creative folks have taken some of his big ideas and run with them.

Dessane Lopez Cassell: That's what we're exploring on an all new season of the In Culture podcast. It's called Variations on a theme, and it's hosted by me, Dessane Lopez Cassell. Each episode, we'll hear from individuals who've come up with new ideas or new ways of working, spurred by an encounter with Sol LeWitt's art and process. There's Daniel Humm, the executive chef of New York's innovative and acclaimed Eleven Madison Park. Then there's Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCullough, co-designers of the fashion label Proenza Schouler. There's also Julianna Barwick, the musician and composer. And of course, there's Charles Gaines, a renowned Conceptual artist who knew LeWitt personally, but whose work marks a shift in the story of Conceptual art.

Dessane Lopez Cassell: Check back on the In Culture feed on February 9th to access all four episodes of Variations on a theme. Subscribe to us on Apple Podcast or Spotify, or listen anywhere you get your podcasts.
